LCD vs LED TV Comparison
Comparing color, clarity, action, size, and cost

The LCD and LED televisions have both been out for several years, yet an LCD vs LED TV Comparison is always something people are interested in reading. Which one is better? Why is it better? Which has the best features? What makes the difference? There are a number of differences, such as the contrast and black levels, viewing angles, spectrum of color/color accuracy, gaming features, fast-motion clarity, size, energy efficiency, reliability, and cost.

In many of these differences, when comparing specifically the LCD and LED as standalone sets, the LED wins in many of these categories, but when the two are combined into one set with the marriage of these exceptional qualities, the combination rules! There are many consumers who absolutely love their sets, regardless of which version it is, but take a look at some of the differences and see which one of these great models comes out ahead.

Backlighting

When the Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) sets have the backlights turned off, the lights are actually turned away from the panel that ended up with dark scenes that were very difficult to see. That also resulted in indistinct pictures and minimal clarity.

The Light Emitting Diode (LED) sets have cleared up this lighting problem because during the dark scenes, the lamps are simply dimmed resulting in far deeper blacks, brighter whites, and greater contrasts, making the details in the dark scenes much more visible. With the contrast issue resolved, the LED becomes the “clear” winner.

Viewing Angles

Viewing Angles on older television sets were never an issue; people could sit off to the side and still see the picture clearly. This became a problem with the LCD sets because if the favorite chair was placed more than 30° off from the direct front of the screen, the contrast degradation became quite the problem.

When the LED sets added backlighting, this didn’t fix the problem, because the LED sets tended to use the LCD panels for their screens. Now with the improvements in these panels, the viewing angles on many sets have been restored to the viewing angles of the old sets.

Color

The color accuracy of the LCD sets is quite excellent. The spectrum of colors on the LCD sets were a great improvement over the older sets, but the color was still limited to the old RGB pixels and both the LCD and LED sets improved on the clarity, but the color spectrum is not much difference between the two.

The yellow pixel was added by a certain manufacturer to produce an ever greater spectrum of color than had ever been seen before, and with that addition to the LCD/LED sets, the pictures almost leap off the screen because they are so vivid and the contrast is so greatly improved. Adding the backlighting of the LED lamps to the LCD sets make realistic colors come alive more than ever before.

Action Scenes

Many consumers complained about the LCD sets when action scenes were showing because whatever the action was, the image became blurred for a second or two. The LED sets tended to have the same problems with the fast action blurring. What the manufacturers soon discovered was that it was a result of the response time and refresh rate rather than the panel or the backlighting. With the newer models, there are great improvements that make both sets on an even level.

Size and Cost

There are some differences in size. The LCD sets range from 15” to 65”, and the LED sets range from 32” to 70”. Of course with the larger size for each category results in higher costs; overall, LCD sets are less expensive.

Final Comparison

The best recommendation is to go down to a store and look at the LCD vs LED TV Comparison as they sit side by side. People have different categories that are most important to them, and looking at the picture quality, sound quality, gaming capabilities, and action abilities all play a role in making that personal choice.

When it all boils down brass tacks, the size is important, but the cost probably is the utmost deciding factor when selecting one of these models. They each have their own qualities that have made consumers realize they do provide great entertainment.
